Huzzah? The second point seems to emanate straight from the Democratic Party’s talking points. Having met Pipes once, I should say that I reject the facile characterization of his efforts as “repressive.” Nonetheless, I do disassociate myself with his cynical brand of “realism” that counsels leaving Iraqis to the tender mercies of the bin Ladenists. I would hope that the Brooklyn Skeptic would join me in offering imperishable solidarity to those brave Iraqi democrats who are assisting us in our mutual – and yes, burdensome – responsibility to “fix” Iraq.
P.S. The Harper’s article to which you linked refers to Pipes, absurdly, as a “neoconservative.”
the internet is tricky on irony. read: “huzzah” [oh god, i hope that this man does not make it into the white house].
i don’t think the second point comes straight from the democrats’ mouths, so much as straight from every single presidential candidate’s desire to rid their administration of the bloody wreckage of iraq. not an admirable sentiment, no matter the party of the speaker.
the perishability of my solidarity is like the perishability a kraft single. not a funny joke. not a funny situation at all. all we can do is try to make sure people keep remembering and realizing what is happening to those brave democrats, along with the brave people just trying to live their lives while not getting blown to shit.
I take exemption to your comment that “all we can do is try to make sure people keep remembering.” Remembering isn’t enough – at least not enough for anyone who aspires to rise above cheap moralism and idle humanitarianism. What else can we do? Rearm, morally and intellectually. And that will provide the foundation for a long and successful surge of offensive operations in Iraq, as well as some much-needed seriousness on the home front.
this may be the wrong place to look for seriousness.
